Historic Working Steam Engine Announced

For 2017  the organizer’s of the Shrewsbury Flower Show are pleased to announce that for the fourth year running there will be a live steam locomotive, from the Ffestiniog  and Welsh Highland Railway, which will be giving rides during the Show along a track estimated to be 130 metre in length.

Lilla is a medium sized quarry engine built by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds in 1891 (number 554). She was built for the Cilgwyn Slate Quarry at Nantlle and was bought by the Penrhyn Quarry in 1928, where she spent most her working life.

In 1963 Lilla was purchased by a private buyer and restored in his garden. She then moved to the railway in the grounds of Knebworth House in Hertfordshire. She came to the Ffestiniog Railway (FR) in 1993 for a gala event and was subsequently bought by a consortium of FR Society members and has remained on the FR ever since. Currently she carries the original green Cilgwyn Quarry livery.

We will be proud to have such an elderly lady at our 2017 Show.
